PAVI FDA Instructor Wins National Screen Institute Prize
PAVI Film & Digital Arts instructor Kate Green in association with Big Smoke Productions and Random Bench Productions is pleased to announce that their short film “HENRY” has won the 2011 National Screen Institute Drama Prize. Kate is thrilled to be working with the talented husband/wife team of Writer Gillian Bennett & Director Russell Bennett. Kate Green is joined by PAVI instructor and producer S. Siobhan McCarthy and Executive Producer Elizabeth Levine.
Gillian was inspired to write “HENRY” after talking to her pregnant best friend about what no one
wants to talk about: the dark side of Motherhood and its disappointments. Further inspired by Kafka's
“The Metamorphosis,” Gillian wondered what a contemporary woman's version might be. “Henry” is
a marked departure of Kafka’s story, but explores similar themes of alienation and isolation.
“It’s wonderful to hear ‘YES’ to one of our projects,” says Russell. “We’ve received many rejections,
which is normal in this business, but it’s so exciting to move forward with “HENRY” with the full
support of the National Screen Institute. We’re proud that the NSI has the courage and artistic foresight
to embrace our dark and complex story.”
“HENRY” was also short-listed for the 2010 MPPIA/BC Film Short Film Award, and the team is
awaiting a decision from the Canada Council for further production funding. Russell and Gillian have
also been short-listed for the 2011’s Crazy 8’s Festival for Andrew Templeton’s script, “Funny
Business” and are in the process of delivering the script for the final round.
